Author Interview - Emily Ann Ward

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I'm Emily. I'm in my twenties, and I'm currently living in Oregon. I love it here, but I've lived quite a few places (Hawaii, Colorado, California) and I've traveled a lot. I love visiting new places and meeting new people. I've been writing since I was very young, mostly fantasy stories. There's just something about the fantastical that my mind loves! I'm the author of short story collections Passages and Beyond home, scifi novella Finding Fiona, and my fantasy novel, Promising Light.

What is your book about?

I'd like to focus on Promising Light, my most recent release. Grace began a secret courtship with Dar for the thrill of doing something against her father, the king’s general. She hadn’t planned on falling in love with him. When Dar suddenly leaves her, she searches for answers, reluctant to let him go.

Everyone seems determined to keep the truth from her—until she’s kidnapped by Dar’s family. They’re shape changers who claim she can break a curse set on them ten years ago by the Protectors, a group of noblemen determined to stifle magic in the name of safety. Torn between two worlds, Grace isn’t sure who to trust. If the curse endures, Dar’s family could die out forever. But to help them, she’ll have to leave behind everything she knows.

How long did it take you to write?

I started it way back in 2005 for Nanowrimo. I lost about half of it through computer viruses and whatnot. I tried to rewrite it in 2008, but quickly lost interest. I finally sat down with the past drafts and put together a loose outline for a complete rewrite. I started the rewrite the end of January of last year and finished it in April. So, from first idea to finished first draft: six years. But if I put together all the writing time, it was only about six months. ;)

What inspired you to write this novel?

I liked the idea of a young girl who was interested in the dark, mysterious guy with secrets. Yeah, sounds familiar, right? But it evolved a lot: Grace is still interested in the mysterious guy, but she has a bigger role than just following him around.

When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

Wow, I don't know if I remember back that far. I was looking through some of my old diaries the other day, and when I was eleven, I wrote I wanted to be "a Christian author living in Hawaii" when I grew up. So, it was sometime around then.

What part of writing do you struggle with? Character, plot, description or dialogue?

I struggle with description. I tend to forget that my readers aren't seeing what I'm seeing. During revisions, I have to be sure to set the scene first.

What made you decide on self-publishing?

After publishing my shorter works (my collections and my novella), I wanted to keep experimenting with the self-publishing with a longer work. I wanted to control the cover art and pricing. I also wanted the chance to work on my own schedule: I didn't need to wait to be accepted or rejected, and any fans I might gain didn't need to wait years between releases.

Did you have a professional editor?

Not at this point. Being a lowly college student, I utilize as many free resources as I can. I have at least three or four beta readers look each piece over, put the work through a critique group like Critique Circle if I can, have my husband and writer friends read it. Then I myself go over it dozens, perhaps hundreds of time. Reading it on paper, on my Kindle, or even in different fonts on my computer. Anything I can do to iron it out perfectly. I think my self-editing skills are improving, too! I had a few embarrassing reviews about Passages about typos and such, but I haven't had any such comments about Finding Fiona. I hope I can keep it up!

Do you edit as you write or wait until your book is finished?

I edit as I write. Usually nothing huge, but I find if I don't edit at all during my first draft, then I end up with something that's just a mess. I need to assess where the story is going and if it's on the right track while I write or I may not be able to fix the problems afterwards. First drafts are just immensely easier than revising for me.

Are you currently working on any projects?

I'm currently writing the sequel to Promising Light. I'm about 60K in, and I think it's about halfway done. I'm also revising some YA novels that I'm going to search an agent for.

Any advice for new authors?

Read a lot, write a lot. Read as widely as you can and try to write every day. The most words you write, the better you get. The more books you read, the more you see what does and doesn't work.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what type of music?

I like listening to movie soundtracks! Composers like Hans Zimmer are perfect for those epic scenes. I also like mellow movie soundtracks like Never Let Me Go and Joan of Arc. But really, once I get into the flow of writing, everything else mostly fades.

Best time of day to write?

The evening. Occasionally I can write right when I wake up, but usually it's after dinner and before I go to bed.

Top 3 authors?

So hard! JK Rowling, Suzanne Collins, and Donald Miller.

Top 3 novels of all time?

Even harder! The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, The Things They Carried by Tim O'Brien, and Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by JK Rowling.

Top 3 movies of all time?

Clue, Inception, and Up

What do you read the most? Fiction or non-fiction?

Fiction, for sure. A lot of YA fantasy and dystopian.

Is your book in Print, ebook or both?

Promising Light and Finding Fiona are available in both print and ebook, but my short story collections are only ebooks due to length.

Where can your readers contact you? Links, etc.

Thanks again, Marie!

Music Influences

My earliest memory is listening to Elvis Presley records in my parents' living room. Must have been about 3 or 4 years old, so Elvis to me is my first musical inspiration. Like my parents, I too became a big fan and remain one to this day. However, I don't really listen to him much these days, especially since I lost my Dad in September 2010. I just end up crying because Elvis' music reminds me so much of my childhood and happier times. And of course, Elvis will always remind me of my dear Dad.

Author Interview - Sean Van Damme

Please tell us a little about yourself.

I’m just an average 20 something guy who lives in Richmond VA with my wonderful fiancé and our animals. I work at a TV news station as a video editor and have been writing in some form or another most of my life. I picked up the novel writing bug back in middle school and that ran for a few years then I got obsessed with movies, which lead me into news, and then eventually I went back to novels after I kept hearing about KDP and Pubit. Most of my free time is consumed by video games and TV shows, which really have replaced movies as my preferred form of visual story telling.

What is your book about?

My book (The Long Night) is a dark fantasy novel about a group of heroes that under normal circumstances would hate each other having to come tighter to fight a horrible evil that has descended upon the land cloaking it in darkness and death.

How long did it take you to write?

The first draft took just under two months to write, I was only working part time then so I had oodles of time to dedicate to the book, and with an end goal I just plowed through the text till I was finished. Having a solid outline also helped more then I can say.

What inspired you to write this novel?

The book started as a mod for Dragon Age Origins, but when that fell through and I had an itch to write, I picked up all of the outlines and prewriting world building that I had done and turned it into a book. I had wanted to go back to my old sci-fi story but it is hard to pick up a project seven or eight years after you walked away from it.

When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?
Back in middle school when I was just writing on lose leaf paper and shoving it into the back of my binders, I knew I wanted to be a writer. I had walked away from that dream for a while when I went into news, but returned to it after I got back into reading, a hobby that school and WoW had stolen from me.

What part of writing do you struggle with? Character, plot, description or dialogue?

I struggle with making my characters real people with past experiences that influence the present. I fall too quickly into making them one or two dimensional figures that are not living breathing people. After that I do struggle with description because sometimes I feel I am going overboard, and for me less is more, I don’t need three paragraphs about how the sky looks, so I at times struggle to rein in the purple prose.

What made you decide on self-publishing?

I had been a big supporter of ebooks and self-publishing, and finally decided I needed to put my money where my mouth was and go for it. Also the idea of querying seemed painful and just something that made me not want to write at all. The hard work with other people is what made me stop wanting to direct movies, I’m a very solitary artist.

Did you have a professional editor?

No, I have been using a combination of a program from Serenity called Editor, and my soon to be Father-in-Law who is a retired PhD with years of writing, and reading under his belt. He gives me honest feedback and reams and reams of grammatical corrections. I figure one day when I have a little more capitol to throw around I’ll go for a professional editor, but right now I have enough grammar Nazis in my family.

Do you edit as you write or wait until your book is finished?

On The Long Night I just wrote till I was finished, same with my second WIP for NaNo but now I stop and at the very least spell check what I am writing every few sentences, or when a song ends on my iPod and I have to change it. I let the not editing get so bad with The Long Night that Word took away my red bars because I had to many errors to track any longer.

Are you currently working on any projects?

Yes I am working on a hard-boiled detective series, and I also have a first draft completed techno-thriller sitting on my desk. All I can say about when those will come out is some time this year, I’m moving slower on the edits then I would like, mostly because I can’t pull myself away from the internet and The Old Republic.

Any advice for new authors?

Write every day. I know it is hackneyed but it works. Also set a deadline for yourself and try to meet that for when you will finish the first draft. Working in TV news I found that the deadline helped me because that is something that I am so used to in my working world that it transferred over, and I set one now for every project I start.

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what type of music?

Yes and it changes based on the book. I have a writing playlist that is mostly Black Hawk Down, and Battlestar Galactica soundtracks. When I was writing my action book that was kind of an 80’s throwback I blasted the power ballads and Top Gun soundtracks.

Best time of day to write?

I write in the Moring and early afternoon, because I don’t go to work until 2pm. I sometimes write at night on weekends but find that I still get my best work done in the morning shortly after I wake up.

Top 3 authors?

Stephen King
Frank Herbert
George RR Martin

Top 3 novels of all time?

Dune (Frank Herbert)
One Hundred Years of Solitude (Gabriel García Márquez)
I, Jedi (Michael A. Stackpole)

Top 3 movies of all time?

The Empire Strikes Back (I don’t do episode numbers for the original trilogy)
Gladiator
The Two Towers

What do you read the most? Fiction or non-fiction?

Fiction by far, I’m surrounded by non-fiction and true crime all day.

Is your book in Print, ebook or both?

Only ebook at the moment, I haven’t gotten around to doing print yet.

Where can your readers contact you? Links, etc.

FREE - My semi-autobiographical novel AGE OF DREAMS!

FREE! 21 -22 January

My semi-autobiographical novel AGE OF DREAMS, an absorbing story of love, addiction and fame, about a young singer trying to leave her past behind only to find that it soon catches up with her and she must face her inner demons before it is too late...

Yes, it's free for two days only (21-22 Jan) so make sure you get downloading onto your Kindle over the weekend!

And yes, parts of it are based on my life. You'll have to read it and guess which parts!

Music Influences

One of my favourite songs from one of my all time favourite bands.

Growing up in the 70s, I loved listening to Beatles songs on the radio. My parents were never fans, but I discovered them myself and have always enjoyed singing along to these timeless classics.

Music back then was just excellent. Let's face it, in the UK we have nothing that can ever match the great music we had back in the 60s and 70s (and perhaps some of the early 80s). We were the tops!

But now, I am so embarrassed at the state of the music scene in my own country, and instead I listen to some amazingly talented foreign bands like Nightwish from Finland/Sweden and Dutch band Epica, plus loads of other bands I'm slowly discovering. And then there's the wonderful Renaissance music-inspired Blackmore's Night (Ritchie Blackmore's band that he has with his American wife Candice Night). If it wasn't for the internet (and especially YouTube) I would never have discovered these great bands.

But for now, it's back to The Beatles
