Author Interview - E.W. Saloka

Please tell us a little about yourself.

E.W. Saloka are writers,artists,conceptual-designers, and also husband and wife. (William and Elaine Saloka)

What is your book about?

Our book Volumes of the Silver Leaf is for all ages and is family friendly YA fantasy. It's a coming of age story about 15 yr old Zachary Wellington who travels with his grandfather to a far off kingdom to find answers to a family mystery. His adventures truly begin when they meet a wise wizard who seems to hold many secrets to the silver leaf. Reluctant heroes and engaging heroines bring heart and soul to this fast paced whimsical fantasy.

How long did it take you to write?

One year seems about right.

What inspired you to write this novel?

Our novel is the culmination of twenty years ago, designing in the fantasy collectible industry. It just sort of flowed from there.

When did you decide you wanted to be a writer?

I knew when I read my first Writer's Digest that I would write a novel one day. W. sculpts fantasy collectibles and he wanted to create a a world for his dragons and other creatures.

What part of writing do you struggle with? Character, plot, description or dialogue?

The first book was a smooth process, no hair pulling or head banging, that probably comes later.

What made you decide on self-publishing?

It was a step by step process and together we managed to come out of it unscathed.

Did you have a professional editor?

W. critiques every word we write, especially mine. I can't tell you how many times I would hear identify your speaker Elaine! (sometimes in my sleep)

Do you edit as you write or wait until your book is finished?

I write it all as it unfolds like a movie in my head. I have to do it that way or I lose the story flow. W. likes to plan everything he writes for our characters,

Are you currently working on any projects

We're in the process of writing the second book of the series and later in the year our books for children. W. sculpted a truly enchanting line of faerie children and I'm building a story around them titled Appletwist Garden.

Any advice for new authors?

We're new authors too, but I think "keep writing" fits here..

Do you listen to music while you write? If so, what type of music?

Tangerine Dream, music from the movie Legend, and sometimes Enya.

Best time of day to write?

Early morning seems to work for me. W. likes late evening. I'm a lark, he's an owl and then later we come together to blend our writing styles.

Top 3 authors?

Amy Tan is my favorite. W. likes Frank Herbert and Anne McCaffrey

Top 3 novels of all time?

Joy Luck Club will always top my list and Master of the Game from my Sidney Sheldon days. W. likes Dune and Dragonriders of Pern

Top 3 movies of all time?

Sleepless in Seattle for me and Blade Runner for W. and Legend for both of us.

What do you read the most? Fiction or non-fiction?

I read fiction when I have time, but I also like spiritual books and other non- fiction. W. likes fiction, fantasy and horror top his list. We are at opposite ends of the spectrum with our book interests.

Is your book in print, ebook or both?

Our book is in ebook format only. We'll have it in print a few months into the new year.
